The "All Star" Literacy Fair included three different hallways with literacy themes, including the Fundations Fairway and Comprehension Corner. At the Homerun Literacy station, children could visit the "iPick" table and select a free book to take home and enjoy.
District Literacy Coach, Jen Elliott, organized a fun-filled evening focused on reading and literacy with eight different activity stations for children and their parents. Teachers showed parents how they use programs such as Fundations to teach phonics and reading.
Fundations is a systematic and phonics based method to teach reading that helps children learn sounds using keywords to help them remember. They then move on to blend the sounds into words. This program has been highly effective in North Olmsted and the parents enjoyed learning about the strategies their childrens' teachers use to help them learn to read.
The evening included a pizza dinner and the very popular Jim "Basketball" Jones who combines fancy basketball moves with lessons on how to listen, be a good audience member, have fun and strive to be the best they can be in the classroom.
Special thanks to all of the parents who spent the evening with their children, the teachers who made the night special, the Principals - Mr. Caleris (Butternut), Mr. Monnin (Forest), Mrs. Ressler (Spruce) and Mr. Samerigo (Birch.)
Mrs. Elliott hit a Grand Slam Home Run with Literacy Night - enjoy the video highlights:
